Have you ever wondered which stories are hidden behind the walls that so many of you pass daily? As a citizen that was born and raised in Amsterdam I was awfully unaware of most stories. Walking the eponymous audio tour by the Stadsarchief made me look differently to the city. It made me go back in history (which was actually not even that long ago). Still Burning documents an evening with the Dolle Mina’s, held in the pouring rain on the birthday of Wilhelmina Drucker. A century ago she fought for women’s rights and was met with hatred. Today, women in politics still face a flood of online hate. Here, the hate comments the Dolle Mina’s received were ritually burned, while female politicians spoke about the abuse they endure and why they keep going. Through speeches, performances and fire, this series captures a crowd that refuses to be silenced. Hate is easy to send. What kindness will you send back?
